What are "nano-pathologies"?
The term "nano-pathology" is used to designate a range of diseases caused by
micro- and inorganic nano-particles that penetrate, through inhalation or
ingestion, in the organism and establish themselves in an organ or a tissue.
Particles are naturally released in the atmosphere by active volcanoes, fires,
and by the erosion of rocks and sand lifted by the wind. These types of
particles are generally rather coarse. Much thinner and usually more numerous
are the particles originating from human activities. Above all, those that
involve the use of high temperatures, such as: use of internal combustion
engines, cement factories, foundries and waste incinerators.
The basic concepts to be borne in mind are:
1. High temperatures give rise to the formation of particles,
2. The higher the temperature, the smaller the size of particles produced,
3. The smaller the particle, the higher is its ability to penetrate tissues.
4. Once particles have established themselves into an organ or tissue, there
are no known ways of eliminating them.
